Save your files by means of scheduled (unattended, without supervision) backups during the Christmas weekend.
Why schedule a backup on Christmas?
Consider your scheduled Christmas backup as a gift for Christmas - the gift that gives you spare time you can spend on.
If you set a backup to run on Friday evening and/or during Saturday (if you work or do something important on your computer), you will not have to spend your time on running a backup manually during the weekend.
Instead, you will spend your free time with your family or however you want during Christmas - curled in your blanket with a cup of coffee or with your family at the dining table.
What to backup during Christmas?
Just as usual when one needs to backup something, the most important files come first. It should be wise to backup the files you last worked on - your work documents, email messages (Outlook or Outlook Express files), etc. If you have not run a backup for some time (e.g. for a week), you can also add other less important files to the backup set.
Which schedule to set on the Christmas holiday?
First of all, you can schedule a backup to run on Friday evening (this one should be highly beneficial). Secondly, if you do some work or modify any files on Saturday, you can schedule a backup to run every 3-4 hours during Saturday to make sure you save your files during holiday preparation - noone knows what can distract you from saving and/or copying a file to a safe place. A backup can also be scheduled on Saturday evening (in case the hourly backups were not conducted). Thirdly, if you plan to make any changes to files during December the 25th, you’d rather also set the backup schedule to run the next day evening too. As seen from the suggested schedules, backups run on the most longed-for holiday of the year can pretty much secure the most recent versions of all your important files, provided you spend some time adjusting your backup scheduling settings in your backup program.
Where to backup on Christmas?
The backup medium used for the occasion depends on the total size of files to be backedup. If you backup only working documents, which occupy small space, you can backup literally anywhere - from a CD-R (one backup)/CD-RW (any number ofbackups) - to an external hard disk - an FTP server, a flash USB drive, a DVD+-R/+-RW or a WebDAV server being inbetween. An external hard disk seems to be one of the best option, as it allows backing up almost unlimited amounts of data any number of times with high speed and low cost per GB.
