Backup to an external hard disk drive

June 11th, 2006 · 1 Comment

Backup to an external HDD (hard disk drive) easily, securely and efficiently.

Why external HDD?

Backing up to an external hard disk drive has a number of benefits:

  • you can backup a lot of information to a single hard disk drive
  • backups to hard disk drives are the quickest, means you backup as quick as possible
  • your backups are secured (even more so if they are encrypted), because they can not be harmed if your system catches a virus or crashes
  • backup to external HDD is one of the cheapest backup methods, because you can get a 200Gb really cheap
  • What to backup?

As hard disk drives (not only external ones) admit huge amounts of data, you can backup anything you want: e-mail messages, work documents, images, video files, game saves - really anything.

    How to backup?

To backup easily, securely and efficiently, you need to do backup right:

  • set up a backup scheduler: this way you won’t have to operate your backups manually. E-mail notifications of successful or unfinished backups are helpful, too.
  • backup using encryption: with encryption your files will only be accessible to you or anyone knowing the encryption password
  • use backup compression to save disk space: this way you will be able to backup more data before deleting anything
  • Is external HDD the best backup medium?

Well, as pointed out above, an external hard disk drive may be the best backup medium, because you can run fast backups, backup a lot of files and still keep your files as secured as possible.
