Backup to a remote FTP online easily

Backup to an FTP server to be able to access your files from anywhere.

Why backup to FTP?

If you want to be able to access your files from multiple places, one of the best variants is to backup to a remote FTP server. Backup to FTP can also save your files, should your hard disk crashes, computer burns or your laptop gets stolen.

What to backup?

As backing up files to FTP is a rather slow process, and some even have to pay for traffic, it is only reasonable to backup small portions of data, like documents, data files, etc. Of course one can backup his medium-sized image collection as well, it just depends on his desires and possibilities..and patience, being not the last thing required.

How often to backup?

As most likely the backup set is rather small, backing up daily or weekly seems to be the best backup schedule. Of course, you can backup however often you want, depending on your needs and possibilities. For instace, it would be wise to backup your important files, that are changed often, as often as you want, just to keep them safe.

How to backup?

First of all, backup compression should be used to save bandwidth, your time and disk space on the server. As simple FTP transfer may not be so safe, you may consider using backup encryption and SFTP. Also, using incremental or differential backup (variants of backing up only changed files), can save time drastically and can potentially allow to increase the backup set size.
