Backup to your network computer via LAN

June 11th, 2006 · No Comments

Backup via LAN (local area network) to run a quick backup of your files.

Why backup via LAN?

Backing up to another local computer has a number of advantages:

  • the backup runs pretty quick, compared to an FTP backup, for instance, and is more convenient than a backup to CD or DVD
  • you can access your backup files on a network computer, if you wish
  • you can as easily restore your files as you back them up over local area network
  • backing up to your own network drive is the best way to backup your work documents

    What to backup?

You can backup using local area network pretty much anything, as you are not limited by bandwidth nor by time, mostly - just by computers’ resources. However, it would not make much sense backing up anything but work documents or data files, unless its a home network - then anything can be backed up.

    How often to backup?

The backup schedule depends on the files you intend to backup. As the backup speed is not quite limited, the timing between backups can be varied as desired. Of course, the more important the documents are, the more often they need to be backed up.

    How to backup?

If you are backing up to a local area network computer, and the remote computer does not belong to you, you would rather compress and encrypt your files. Compressing files is useful in any case, but file encryption is required if you are backing up to a less reliable destination than your own computer, as anyone in the network will perhaps be able to access your files.
