Reap the most benefit from backup by applying smart tips to save your time, effort and improve security.

Select important files to backup

To save your time and disk space, it should be wise to backup only the files you can not live without. This may include:

  • data files: work and home documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint files) - these are the most important files containing vital information
  • your mail client files (e.g. Outlook/Outlook Express files) - though not as critical as work documents, you’d rather back your mail messages up to have a peace of mind
  • images, photo collections - you can backup only the recent ones or the whole set of image or photo collections at once
  • MP3 audio files - you can backup your whole MP3 audio colletions to a large backup medium, such as external hard disk or a set of DVDs
  • video files - backup your video collection to an exteral hard disk to save space on the main hard disk or for storage
  • Exclude unnecessary files

Including temporary files of various applications (e.g. *.tmp) is not necessary and can occupy extra space you can use for something more important.

    Choose the right backup medium

It is highly important to choose the right backup medium for your type of files. A fitting storage medium will allow you to run the backup quickly, will not require multiple intemediate operations, such as inserting an extra CD/DVD disc and should also make future file recovery easy and convenint, should it be necessary.

    Compress your files

Compressing your backup files will not only save disk space on your storage location, but will also save your time, which will be more noticeable when handling large volumes of data, like Outlook files. (Compressing audio and video files, though may seem necessary, it may not be required if you wish to use the files you backed up from their backup location)

    Encrypt your secret files

If you have some information you do not want others to see, you’d rather encrypt your backup files using one or several encryption algorithms to make file reading impossible. The only way to have access to the encrypted files is to decrypt them using the same backup software and the encryption password you used. (Please make sure you remember the password as it is impossible [or will require a great deal of time and effort]to decrypt files without a password)
