Less known backup methods

Apart from simply using backup programs, there are other methods you can use to backup your data.

Disk image backup

A hard disk drive image backup method saves the whole partition in a compressed file for you to later restore it, in case you need a backup. This method isn’t as elegant and fast as selecting files for your backups, but it works if you need to backup a lot of data often.

Total backup

Total backup is slightly different from image backup, as it simply means backing up all of your files at once. While image backup uses special image backup software, total backup is a notion and can be done any way you like: manually, or using a backup tool.

Backup rotation schedule

Backup rotation schedule is an advanced backup scheme, allowing you to have just a couple of disks to have daily, weekly and older backups. The most wide spread backup rotation schedules are Tower of Hanoi and GrandFather Father Son.

Which backup method to choose?

Of course, there may be many backup techniques, but you only need one. It all comes how much and how often you need to backup. Backup rotation schedules, apart from image and total backups, should rather be used to backup smaller amounts of data daily, larger amounts weekly and do total backups monthly and yearly.
