Backup to DVD easily, efficiently and securely
Backup to DVD: backup your work, home documents, image, photo, MP3 collections for storage, convenience and security.
Why backup to DVD?
Backup to DVD has a number of benefits:
large disc space: a single DVD admits 4.7Gb of data, a double-layered admits about 8.3Gb and a double-sided double layered DVD admits over 16Gb of data.
conveniece: just insert a DVD in your DVD writing device and backup a fairly large amount of files.
mobility: carry a DVD with your work documents anywhere you want
What to backup to DVD?
An amount of data, which can be written to DVD, determines the type of data to backup, to an extent:
backup your work, home documents regularly to a DVD-/+RW to have the latest file versions ready
backup your image, photo, audio (MP3) collections to DVD for storage
backup a fairly large amount of data to a set of DVDs to be able to recover your original files in case something happens to them (wrong change, file deletion, hard disk crash, etc.)
How to backup to DVD?
In this case, the type of data, written to DVD, and the purpose ofbackup, determine how you write your data to DVD:
when backing up a large set of files you do not intend to use directly from DVDs, compression may come in handy to save your disc space
if you intend to use your files from DVDs directly (your image or audio files), you’d rather not use any additional settings (compression or encryption)
when backing up a small set of files to a DVD-/+RW often, you can schedule a backup for convenience
when writing your sensitive files to DVD, file encryption will prove useful
What else to consider?
There are additonal points to take into account when using DVD as your backup medium:
choose quality discs (by Verbatim or Mitsubishi Chemicals, for instance) to ensure your backups are readable
label your DVDs if you use a fair amount of discs for your backups to be able to recove files easily by inserting DVDs in right succession
store your DVDs carefully: once misplace a single DVD and you won’t be able to recover some important files

[…] When do I need to backup to CD? As mentioned before, you can reap the most benefit from backing up to CDs if you have a fairly small set of data to backup. This amounts to about 500Mb-4Gb. In this case, you will only need from one to six discs. A larger amount of data will require a backup to DVD. […]
